Protein Powder
Protein powder has never been more popular than it is today. Once the domain of bodybuilders, protein powder is now a mainstream product designed for the masses and sold under numerous brands in supermarkets, health food stores and pharmacies.
The reason for its popularity is partly due to an increasing awareness of the importance of protein in the diet. As the main building block of muscle development protein is an absolute essential requirement for anyone involved in strenuous exercise.
Protein feeds the muscles to stimulate muscle growth and aid in the recovery process. It also keeps your body anabolic, which means it will burn more fat without depleting muscle, hence protein powder’s popularity among the weight conscious community.
We advise consuming protein powder as a weight loss supplement, not as a food replacement. However, if you are getting an adequate amount of protein from your diet, in the form of meat, fish, eggs and legumes, then it’s unlikely you will need additional protein in the form of a powder.
Advantages of protein powder over food:
The biggest advantage of protein powder over food is its convenience. After all, it’s easier to drink a protein shake than it is to buy, prepare, cook and eat poultry, fish, meat or egg whites – though not nearly as enjoyable.
Consuming small, frequent meals is the optimal way to eat, regardless of whether your goal is fat loss or muscle gain. But for many people, eating like this is almost impossible. That's when a high quality protein powder is the most helpful.
Aside from convenience, the truth about protein supplements is that they offer few advantages over protein foods. There is no scientific evidence that you can't meet all of your protein needs for muscle growth through food. As long as you eat every three hours and you eat a complete protein such as eggs, lean meat or dairy products with every meal, it is not necessary to consume any protein supplements to get good results.
So, our advice is to focus on real food as much as you can and keep your protein powder for when you are time poor.
