Protein Supplements

Protein supplements are often used by bodybuilders wanting to supplement their diets with a powered form of protein.  The powder is mixed with water, milk or juice and is generally consumed immediately before and after exercising or in place of a meal.

The theory behind the supplementation is that bodybuilders, by virtue of their unique training methods and end-goals require higher-than-average quantities of protein to support maximum muscle growth.

However, even mere mortals like the rest of us can benefit from protein supplements.  They come in various forms including ready to drink shakes, bars, bites, oats, gels and powders.

Protein Supplements

Protein supplements are useful when we are not getting adequate protein from real food.  Sometimes it’s because we are time poor and not cooking for ourselves or it might be because we are not including enough meat, eggs or legumes in our overall diet.

Protein in the body is important because it contributes to cell membranes, enables chemical reactions and direct metabolic pathways, promotes haemoglobin in the blood, helps maintain water balance, carries iron to tissues, produces hormones, creates antibodies and enables muscle to contract and allow movement.

For those interested in losing weight, failing to consume an adequate amount of protein can slow down many metabolic processes making weight loss extremely difficult.  Protein deficiency also means the immune system no longer functions efficiently, increasing the likelihood of infections.

So broadening your diet with protein supplements is fine and actually quite beneficial especially if you are keen on losing weight.  The other advantage of protein supplements, and even better, protein rich foods is that they ensure satiety or a feeling of fullness which helps prevent overeating.

After all, if you feel satiated then you are less likely to binge or eat the wrong foods.  While it sounds contradictory, the best advice we can give you is to avoid being hungry and that way you are more likely to reach your weight loss goals.
