Whey Protein

“Little Miss Muffet sat on her tuffet, eating her curds and whey...”

So, what exactly is curds and whey?

Basically, curds and whey is the lumps and liquid found in cottage cheese.

But it’s the whey that seems to be attracting most interest among our weight conscious population these days.

whey protein

Whey protein is actually not a single protein but a collection of proteins and protein fractions (or peptides) found naturally in the whey component of milk. However, this innocuous looking substance is thought to promote weight loss in three ways.

Whey protein increases your daily intake of protein without packing in excessive carbs and fat.
It is digested quickly which makes a good option as a post-workout liquid meal.
It is rich in leucine, an amino acid that helps preserve lean muscle while promoting fat loss.

So, whey protein is good for weight loss but eating fresh and nutritious protein based food is even better.  Remember, fat loss can only be achieved if calorie consumption is reduced in a way that does not cause persistent hunger. Switching to a high-protein low carb diet is one way to attain this balance.

As we mentioned above, gram for gram, calorie for calorie, protein produces more satiety (fullness) than either carbohydrate or fat. Therefore, by increasing the number of calories you get from protein and at the same time as reducing your carb intake, you can avoid hunger and lose weight more easily and more sustainably.

Always remember, avoiding hunger is fundamental to permanent weight loss. And one way to ensure you never reach that ravenously hungry stage which can result in binging is to stock up on protein rich snacks or whey protein based products to maximise your weight loss success.
